When I strayed to the art of other cultures that were not Western European or Western European derivative in art school, I was directed back to the art of “unassailable” modern Western artist giants like abstract expressionist sculptor Mark di Suvero.
Di Suvero, a construction worker turned artist after a work related accident, epitomized the powerful and bold of Western “high” art: one of the most successful artists of the late 20th century, his massive sculptures incorporated such materials as railroad ties, tires, huge timbers and steel I-beams.
