Written in 1853 by famed American poet and songwriter, Stephen Foster, "Old Dog Tray" was one of Amy’s favorite songs at the age of one. I found many versions of the song in sheet music dating back to the time of its writing, and hope that when I start my book blog for this e-book some musicologists will weigh in as to the history of all the different lyric versions. I have recorded my own version of the song here with a little music box sound effect that made me think of the 19th century. Although I did not care for the song myself (finding the words overly sentimental, and the melody mournfully minor), I did catch myself humming it frequently after learning it. This was a little scary, and interesting, because I read somewhere recently that scientists are discovering "catchy tunes" exhibit mathematical patterns. Are successful songwriters like Foster somehow intuitively tuned in to melodic patterns in our universe? continues p 2
