A work-in-progress, it occurred to me that a book I just read, The Next American Essay, edited by John D'Agata, was the perfect starting point for me to explore what a New Media book review might be. My friend Jeffrey pointed out that this is really a new media essay about the book, not so much a review. I would say a hybrid. And, definitely, a personal essay. That seems to be where I am headed: new media essays and journalism with a personal voice in the reporting. I am not attempting to be objective - I learned a long time ago (when I studied documentary filmmaking in undergraduate school) that objectivity in documentary reporting is a myth. The Next American Essay is a selection of essays, 1975-2003, that challenge our ideas about what an essay is and what it might be. I want to challenge it further.
