Part 5: Charlie Rose Guest List WEB Art by Terry Bailey
Monday February 5, 2007 to . . . .

Since count began: between 1-29-05 and 05-30-07 : 229 women guests for 1303 men guests
and
2 male dogs!

Upon noticing that Charlie was about to have Norman Mailer as his guest (2-5-07), I decided it was time to email Charlie about my picnic with Mailer, and to update him on the gender count of his guests. Here is the letter I wrote to Charlie (I received an email from his staff that they were indeed forwarding it to him, but I did not receive any response from him).

Dear Charlie Rose,

It was 1983. Mailer stopped by Francis Coppola's home in Northern California. I was just a few years out of film school and managing the Saul Zaentz Film Studio in Berkeley, but spending the week-end with a group of women at Francis' home. He had offered to host a week-end seminar for women directors. Women and Film had recently published a study: only 6% of all films (theatrical, TV and commercials) were directed by women.  Francis was open about discussing the absence of women directors. Particularly since his film mentor and teacher had been a woman, Agnes Varda.

We were on a lunch break, and Mailer sat next to me at a picnic table. He face registered amusement. I inquired about it. He told me, without hesitation, that he did not believe women could be film directors. He told me that he considered film directing to be the height of creative ability, open to only a few men. He was in awe of Francis. He was shocked that Francis was wasting his week-end in this manner.

Shortly after that, Mailer attempted his own hand at theatrical film directing. I have not committed the name of his film to memory, I do remember it was a really big flop. And, yes, I was glad.

Terry Bailey
