April Patterns I - XI Animation © Terry Bailey 2005

I am playing with patterns a great deal since painting the Kaleidoscope Sad Girl Series
(see WetPaint). I have always played with tiles, but now patterns and tiles are holding the most interest. Possibly also because I am reading the Penrose (history) book on Artificial Intelligence, and became so aware of recognizing visual patterns in the lists of binary numbers he demonstrates with.

Above is a small version of an animation I made of several pattern paintings. And below a sample detail of one of those paintings. My great discovery here was that I could create infinite patterns within patterns if I had infinite resolution in my computer.

It is a problem for me right now, though, in addition to being a transformational art-making discovery: because I am developing more and more detailed patterns and illustrations, based on the higher file size and speed capability of computers and the higher resolutions possible due to the increasing power of computers - BUT - as the capabilities increase, so do the COSTS! Now much of my work needs to be printed very large, in order to see the detail (in the direction of infinitely large as I continue to push toward infinitite pattern detail!), and that is very expensive. So I have entered a phase in my work where it will be mandatory to receive some grants, or sell my work for serious prices, just to get it out of my computer!
