Breaking News: 500+ Area 14 supporters were extremely disappointed when our City Council voted NOT to downzone GGH and Area 14 to the low density zoning at which it has naturally eveolved over the last fifty years. Council continues to support developers over citizens at every turn in Glendale. Hundreds of citizens have joined together to stop the destruction of other special streets and neighborhoods, and Council continues to ignore the people whom they are supposed to represent, in favor of developers. Residents of GGH and neighbors are awaiting word from the owner of GGH as to his plans, we wil keep you posted when any news arises. At this time, the owner has the legal right to destroy GGH and replace it with his multi-story, 86 unit, property line to property line development - and to tear out the 91 trees there.
Brief History (see button right for more): Three of the council members continue to disregard the recommendations of Planning and the wishes of the public. The Commission, the Homeowners Association and the Glendale Historical Society all supported the downzoning of Area 14 and preservation of Glendale Garden Homes.
We fought for a low density down-zoning change from 1250 to 2250 to save Area 14 (North Central above Lorraine, Lorraine and Viola Street) from overdevelopment, and to preserve the area's many beautiful trees. The residents of the neighborhood want a 2250 down-zone designation. The Planning Department proposed a 2250 down-zone designation, and the Planning Commission approved a 2250 down-zone designation in 2005. Councilmembers Weaver and Quiintero supported this down-zone proposal. The three other council members (Manoukian, Yousefian and Najarian) opposed it and offered a “compromise” zoning change to 1650. A 1650 down-zone designation will NOT stop the overdevelopment of Area 14 - nor will it save the trees or Glendale Garden Homes.
On Feb. 13, 2006, the Planning Commission upheld its original support for a 2250 designation of Area 14, and sent back the Council's 1650 "compromise" to them as unacceptable! On March 14, the City Council received the official report from the Planning Commission, reaffirming their support for 2250 and refusal of a 1650 "compromise." Yet Mayor Manoukian and councilmembers Yousefian and Najarian refused to listen to the residents of Area 14, the citizens of Glendale, and their own Planning Commission and down-zone Area 14 to a 2250 designation!
Please continue to write and express your anger at being an ignored citizen, and at the lack of respect for citizens and neighborhoods that the Council continues to show!

We also continue to work toward historical designation and recognition for Glendale Garden Homes in order to preserve it. GGH has now been designated an historic resource by the city of Glendale, but that does not guaratee by any means that it will be preservied (many historic resources are demolished, and the city puts a plaque where they once stood!) - we need your participation!
